This class is designed to prepare the student to start and superimpose intravenous fluids. The content will include types of fluids and device rationales for therapies, safety factors, complications, monitoring and preparation of site, patient and equipment. It will also include supervised practice of the technique of venipuncture on mannequins and fellow classmates and will include the following:

1. Methods of blood withdrawal;
   a. Skin puncture;
   b. Venipuncture
2. Selection of appropriate method;
3. Safety measures;
4. Possible complications;
5. Preparation of withdrawal sites;
6. Psychological preparation of the patient

Students will successfully start 3 IVs and perform blood withdrawal on 3 fellow classmates. The course fulfills requirements of (and is approved by) the California State Board of Nursing for IV Certification/Blood withdrawal for LVNs. Fee includes all materials and equipment.

This class will be conducted in person.  The class will involve hands-on physical contact as part of scenario practice, skills training, and skills competency verification.  As of this publication, the following precautions will be in place:

• Health screening:
  • Student should not attend class if they are sick.
    • Further screening may include temperature checks and symptom questionnaires.
  • Classroom hygiene
    • Students will practice appropriate hand washing and/or hand sanitizing.
    • Students will be reminded to avoid touching their eyes, nose, and mouth.
    • Surfaces and equipment will be sanitized after use.
  • Social Distancing will be required,
    • When feasible, physical distancing of 6 feet will be practiced.
  • Personal protective equipment
    • Students will wear personal protective equipment (gloves, masks, face shields) when performing medical scenarios or practicing skills.
    • Please bring your own mask
    • Students will be issued a face shield to keep
  • Compliance/culture
    • The instructor and students will be expected to model their commitment to quality medical care by supporting these strategies.
