At our most recent Board of Trustees meeting, the Board passed a resolution that reflects our collective commitment to inclusivity, equity, diversity, and support for all students. The resolution declares April as Campus Pride Month, underscoring our dedication to fostering an educational environment that celebrates and supports our LGBTQ+ students.

The resolution acknowledges the gaps in protection at the state and federal levels for individuals based on sexual orientation and gender identity. It commemorates the Stonewall Uprising and the progress made towards LGBTQ+ rights, such as the Supreme Court's decision guaranteeing marriage equality. Importantly, it celebrates the spirit of inclusivity that the rainbow flag symbolizes, particularly for our students.

Our decision to declare April as Campus Pride Month, diverging from the national observance in June, comes from a practical consideration for our academic calendar, and aligns with other colleges and universities across the country. We want to ensure that all students are on campus to participate in, and benefit from, the programming and awareness activities we have planned. Flying the rainbow flag across the district is a visible testament to our dedication to diversity, equity, and inclusion and we want to make sure as many students see it as possible.

The Pride and Dreamer Center (PDC), the newest addition to our Multicultural Equity Center, is the embodiment of our commitment to inclusivity. Made possible through the California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office and the LGBTQ+ and Dreamer Resource Liaison (UndocuLiaison) funds, the PDC is a hub of support and resources for our undocumented and LGBTQ+ students. It offers a safe space where students can find guidance, support, and a sense of community. The center and its services are crucial in addressing the unique challenges these students face, ensuring they have every opportunity to succeed academically and personally.

I am incredibly proud of the steps we are taking as a college to support our LGBTQ+ and undocumented students. This resolution and the creation of the PDC are not just symbolic gestures; they are concrete actions that reflect our values and our belief in the power of education to transform lives. We are committed to not just talking about equity and inclusion but living these principles every day, in every aspect of our campus life.

I want to express my gratitude to our Board of Trustees for their leadership, our staff and faculty for their dedication, and our students for their courage and resilience. Together, we are building a community that recognizes the dignity and worth of every individual, fostering an environment where everyone belongs and can thrive.

As we move forward, I invite every member of our college community to join us in this critical work. Whether it's participating in Campus Pride Month activities, engaging with the Pride and Dreamer Center, or simply showing support for our LGBTQ+ and undocumented students, every action counts. Together, we can make College of the Redwoods a beacon of inclusivity, respect, and empowerment.
