Associate Head Coach

Former College of the Redwoods star shooting-guard Justin Claus is the offensive mind behind the Corsairs Three-Peat Golden Valley Conference titles. After his second season as the offensive architect, Claus was promoted to Associate Head Coach at College of the Redwoods. In his first season as Associate Head Coach, Redwoods made a run to the California Regional Final and the staff was voted CCCMBCA State Coaches of the Year.

“Justin is probably the most underrated and talented coach I’ve ever seen at this level,” head men’s coach, Ryan Bisio says. “His even-keel nature doesn’t illustrate how much of a competitor he is – and how much work he’s done to develop our players. Justin and I are one entity, and the collaborative nature in which we work has brought out the best in all of us. Justin is my basketball soul mate, and I am so incredibly proud of his evolution as a leader.”

During his tenure at College of the Redwoods, the Corsairs have led California in assists per game (22.2), been #2 in the state in three pointers made per game (11) and have averaged 85 points per game. Claus has had a crucial role in developing three All-State players at Redwoods, along with five All-Conference players.

“My experience coaching at Redwoods has been rewarding,” explained Claus. “To be able to contribute to the successful run we are experiencing is a privilege, especially at my alma mater and in front of my home community. The emphasis we place on connections and relationships, between the players, coaches, college, and community, makes Redwoods a special program to be a part of.”

Prior to joining Redwoods, Claus served as an assistant coach for the Humboldt State men’s basketball program during the 2018-2019 season. Claus’ contribution to the Lumberjacks program culminated with a birth in the California Collegiate Athletic Association conference tournament.

Prior to his stint and Humboldt State, Claus was an assistant coach for his alma mater at Fortuna High School boys’ varsity basketball team from 2016-2018. Claus’ keen offensive mind and influence was apparent in the success of the Fortuna boys, as they won two-straight league titles and two-straight conference tournament championships. Fortuna’s 30-win season ranks as an all-time high in the history of the Humboldt Del Norte league.

Claus also coached AAU team in the Humboldt County area – leading the Factory Pride in local, regional, and national level AAU competitions. In 2021, Justin was tapped as director for the Humboldt Wild AAU program where he still serves.

In his time as a player at College of the Redwoods, Claus was first-team All-Golden Valley Conference his freshman and sophomore year. His shooting prowess and high basketball IQ landed him a roster spot on Humboldt State University’s 2016-2017 team.

Justin is currently enrolled at Humboldt State University finishing up his bachelor’s degree in recreation administration.
