TechPrep

What is TechPrep?

Tech Prep programs in California provide for the integration and articulation of curriculum among secondary and post-secondary programs. Tech Prep programs provide academic and career technical preparation in identified career pathways. The programs allow students to begin their career training through a program of study at the secondary level and then transition into the post-secondary level to earn an advanced technical degree or certificate. The educational training in a career pathway is academically rigorous and provides students with the fundamental skills required for post-secondary admission and the technical skills to compete in California's highly technical economy.

This project is funded through the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act. No person shall, on the grounds of sex, race, color, national origin or disability, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under this project.

Benefits to Students

High School students can take courses that will transfer to certificate and degree programs at College of the Redwoods without paying any college tuition.  Through taking the courses in high school, the student will save money, not have to repeat courses,  and be better prepared to enter College of the Redwoods certificate or degree programs.

Benefits to Schools

College of the Redwoods will attract more and better prepared students into their certificate and degree programs.  Collaborative relationships with secondary faculty in discipline specific areas will be developed creating partnerships that allow faculty at both the secondary and post-secondary level to become more aware of the challenges each faces.  These partnerships also allow faculty at each educational level to develop curriculum that is rigorous and relevant to the needs of the students and business and industry.

Benefits to the Community

Building a better skilled workforce through partnerships between secondary and post secondary and the involvement of business and industry creates a better skilled workforce.  A better skilled workforce can attract new business and industry and reduce crime by having community members gainfully employed.
